With a power transfer system, you get a transfer switch and a power cord. They can also come with a power inlet box should you need one.
As you can see by the picture, a power inlet box is necessary if you're running the power in from outside to an internal transfer switch. Should you have your transfer switch and electrical panel located inside your garage, you may not need this inlet box since you can run the power cord from your generator outside through your garage.
Remember never to run your generator indoors, in a garage, or in your basement. The carbon monoxide produced by the engine is fatally dangerous.
With the power inlet box option, all you have to do in the event of a storm is plug the power cord from your generator to the power inlet box and start it up. With a garage setup, it's equally as easy in the event of a storm. Set your generator outside at least 10-15 feet away from your home and connect your power cord from your generator to your transfer switch. You'll need at lest a 25-foot power cord to reach between the two.
